September 13 - Student Choice - Five Guys Burgers and Fries

I had next to no time to actually get somewhere awesome today but the good thing is..I worked today! That meant I had a little bit of time after work in which I could sit down and scare away customers by staring at them and drawing. Amazing!

It made me realize that people eat really fast and you can be drawing them one second and the next they're up and leaving...so it was interesting to say the least. But it also means unfortunately I didn't have many drawings that I liked. I also was trying something different to be able to tell the male figures from female figures..not sure if it worked out how I liked though

  1. People certainly do eat fast! You know what helps though is to find a place where people are eating and watching TV (like the hospital cafeteria). I think it slows them down, with the added bonus that it distracts them from noticing you drawing.

Anyway, there's a fun quality about this, but they do look like children. Is that what you were going for? Because with children it's hard to distinguish between genders anyway. Maybe that's what you're running into?

  2. Jessica,
I agree with Kirsten's observation. When drawing children, differentiating genders is more difficult. You can't use a lot of lines (it makes them look older) so you have to go by clothing and hair, mostly.
Develop the faces and hands of your characters. You can be simplistic but still describe an older person.
Also, try to complete your drawings - that is, include the entire figure. I like vignettes and close-ups but you tend to leave the bottoms of your drawings incomplete.
